VJ Mayank jha takes us on a quick visit to Chotila’s Chamunda hill temple situated right on the Ahmedabad-Rajkot highway. Camera and editing work is done by Kashyap Trivedi in this video. Chotila’s Chamunda mata’s temple is situated on a small hill called Chamunda hill. Devotees can reach to the chamunda mata temple at the top of this hill after 500 steps. Steps are well covered to prevent visitors from exposure of scorching sun.

Glimpse of History

Originally a holding of the Sodha Parmar clan, Chotila was conquered from Jagasio Parmar by the Khachar Kathis in 1566 AD. Most of the Khachar Kathi’s trace their origin to the Chotila house.

Story behind the name ‘Chotila’

According to a legend, Jagasio Parmar of nearby town Muli was murdered by the Kathis of Khachar Kuman and Vala clans. These Kathis took possession of Chotila and then divided it into four parts (char tilas), The village thereafter came to be known as Chotila.

British & Princely era

Thereafter it was made the agency Thana under the British. Chotila was a VI class princely state and came to be attached with the Nawanagar state under the attachment scheme prior to independence.

Birth Place of Dimpal Kapadia & Zaverchand Meghani

Famous Hindi film actress Dimpal Kapadia was born in Chotila. She is elder daughter of Chotila’s Gujarati entrepreneur Chunnibhai Kapadia and his wife Betty. When her daughter twinkle Khanna(now married to famous Hindi film hero Akshay Kumar) visited Ahmedabad some years back, she specially visited Chotila and paid her visit to Chamunda temple on the hill.

Saurashtra’s most celebrated writer, author, poet, journalist, freedom fighter late Zaverchand Meghani was also born here in Chotila. House in which Zaverchand Meghani born was in neglected condition till recent time, but some people have started to preserve it now.

About Goddess Chamunda

Chamunda – Chamunda mata or Rann-chandi ( warrior goddess ) is the goddess of power. She is another form of Durga. Her illusion is twinlike as she is also called Chandi-Chamunda. The fierce mother goddess has big eyes dressed in red and green adorned with garlands of flowers and in front of her is vehicle the Lion.

Two Demons named ‘Chand’ and ‘Mund’ did great penance for many years to please Lord Brahma. When Brahma was pleased he apeared in front of them and the demons asked for being very strong warriors to rule the world and take over heaven. Lord Brahma was merciful so he granted the wish. Soon there was a chaos in the world because as demons had became very greedy, they attempted to take over heaven as well as the three abodes of Lord Vishnu (Vaikunth), Shiva (Kailas) and Brahma (Brahmalok ).The three Gods went to the mother goddess Parvati who took the form of Chandi and Chamunda and ultimately slayed Chand and mund.
