Major Saurashtra dams including Bhadar,Shetrunji overflow

50 Major dams in Saurashtra including the biggest Bhadar dam which is the main source of drinking water for Rajkot city and Shetrunji dam which is the main source of drinking water for Bhavnagar city are overflowing following heavy rains over the last three days. Recent rain spell has brought great relief to the people and the administration because water scarcity problem was looming in parts of Saurasthra including some of the major cities.

Some of the dams overflowing in Saurasthra are Bhadar-2, Veri, Aji-2, Survododi, Lalpari, Fofal, Nyari-1 and Nyari-2, Machhu-1, Machhu-2, Munjiyasar, Khodiar, Veradi, Kabarka, Sakroli, Vartu-1, Vartu-2, Sapardi, Fulzar(Kotadabavisi). Junagadh district’s 16, Jamnagar’s 10, Rajkot’s 9 and Porbandar’s 1 and Amreli district’s 4 dams are overflowed.

Low lying areas are alerted in affected areas. Villages in Madhuvanti river’s low lying areas of coastal Madhavpur-Ghed are experiencing flood like situation due to water logging. Traffics on roads like Una-Talala-Junagadh, Jamkandorana-Gondal, Kutiyana-Ghed were disrupted due to breakdown of causeways.

On Wednesday 196 talukas of Gujarat had experienced rain. Among them, Lakhtar had highest, Jamkandorana had second highest, Jetpur had third highest and Lathi, Liliya had fourth highest rainfall. All these centres are located in Saurashtra area.

Majority of small check dams in Saurashtra too are now full to their capacity due to recent rain spell. Saurashtra had government sponsored-peoples partnered check-dam movement in late 90s that resulted in thousands of check dams.
