BJP gets 15, Congress 11 seats in Gujarat: Poll Bytes
Ahmedabad, DeshGujarat, 16 May, 2009

-Bharatiya Janata Party has got 15 out of 26 Lok Sabha seats in Gujarat, one more than 2004 elections.

-Congress has got 11 seats, one less than 2004 elections.

-Congress is victorious on Banaskantha and Patan seats in North Gujarat, Dahod, Anand, Kheda seats in central Gujarat, Bardoli and Valsad in southern Gujarat’s tribal belt, Rajkot, Surendranagar, Porbandar and Jamnagar in Saurashtra.

-BJP has got Mehsana and Sabarkantha seats in North Gujarat, Gandhinagar, Ahmedabad-East, Ahmedabad-West seats in Ahmedabad belt, Panchamahal, Vadodara and Bharuch seats in central Gujarat, Surat and Navsari seats in South Gujarat, Bhavnagar, Amreli, Junagadh and Kutch seats in Saurashtra-Kutch.

-Congress snatched Patan, Dahod and Porbandar seats from BJP while BJP snatched Mehsana, Sabarkantha, Amreli and Junagadh seats from the Congress.

-BJP kept it’s urban seats Ahmedabad(two), Gandhinagar, Vadodara, Surat and Navsari intact, but lost Rajkot. However ‘urban’ Rajkot seat’s large rural area(Jasdan, Tankara, Wankaner) played significant part in Congress’s victory. Rajkot’s victorious Congress candidate Kunvarji Bavalia hails from rural area of Jasdan in Rajkot district.

-As BJP hoped for a clean sweep or atleast 19 seats, this result can not be considered as up to the mark performance. Congress has done neither poor nor a great show. Congress’s greatest achievement is victory over Rajkot seat which is BJP bastion for a long long time. BJP’s achievement is defeat of Shankarsinh Vaghela. BJP had not expected of loosing Rajkot, Banaskantha and Kheda at least.

-Due to bad selection of candidates, BJP has lost at least four seats in Gujarat. Candidates for Patan, Rajkot, Jamnagar and Porbandar were faulty. While selecting Rajkot and Patan candidates, local cadres were not consulted.

-Darshna Jardosh(BJP Surat), Jayshriben Patel(BJP Mehsana), Punamben Jat(BJP Kutch) and Prabha Taviyad(Congress Dahod) are victorious female candidates from Gujarat.

-Shri L.K.Advani has secured 4,34,044 votes. His wining margin is 1,21,747. Shri Advani has secured around 54% votes. In 2004 elections he had secured around 60% votes. Thus his margin in percentage has come down to 6 percent. Compare to 2004 elections, Gandhinagar has 7 lakh lesser voters, so Advani’s lead in numbers is obviously less considering this fact.

-Shankarsinh Vaghela lost Panchamahal seat due to two Muslim candidates who cut down Vaghela’s Muslim votes. Vaghela was bit overconfident too about his victory. He spent huge time canvassing for other candidates in Gujarat. Vaghela has lost Panchamahal by margin of 2,60 votes. Vaghela secured 279989 votes while his rival BJP’s Prabhatsinh Chauhan who had lost an assembly election in 2007 secured 282058 votes.

-Gordhan Zadafia’s Mahagujarat Janata Party couldn’t perform up to the expectations. His very optimistic Surat candidate could secure around 15000 votes only. However Gordhan Zadafiya’s Bhavnagar performance is remarkable. Single handedly and with a shortage of fund, he secured 1,56,000 votes. On Patan seat, Mahagujarat Janata Party’s Patel candidate cut prospects of BJP’s Bhavsinh Rathod’s victory. Bhavsinh lost by margin of 18,501 votes.

-There will be by-elections for Gujarat’s Sami-Harij, Dehgam, Jamkandorana, Jasdan, Danta and Chotila assembly seats within 6 months. From Sami-Harij, Bhavsinh Rathod has resigned as he changed his party to fight election. Patan’s victorious Congress candidate will vacate Dehgam seat, Congress’s successful candidate from Porbandar Lok Sabha seat Viththal Radadiya will vacate his Jamkandorana assembly seat, Rajkot’s new MP Kunvarji Bavalia will leave Jasdan seat, Danta would be vacated by Banaskantha’s new Congress MP-elect Mukesh Gadhvi. Chotila’s Congress MLA passed away recently due to ill health.

-Who can be made ministers in Manmohan Singh government from Gujarat? Kunvarji Bavalia and Viththal Radadia are most appropriate and chances of Kunvarji Bavalia are strong. Bharat Sinh Solanki also may get ministry. Chances of Dinsha are 50-50.

-Vadodara will have new Mayor as existing Mayor Balkrishna Khanderao Shukla has won Lok Sabha.

-Victory of BJP candidates in Sangh Pradesh Diu Daman and Selvasa is amazing achievement. Selvasa’s 7-time-sitting MP Mohan Delkar’s defeat is not only great but also shocking achivement for the BJP.

-Gandhinagar candidate Mallika Sarabhai has lost her seat and deposit both. According to rules, defeated candidate has to get 1/6 of total valid votes to save his/her deposit. Mallika could secure around 9000 votes out of total of around 7 lakh votes. Thus she is badly defeated. Election season is over for her and probably a publicity season also.
