As per the Indian Readership Survey(IRS) for the first quarter of year 2011, Gujarati newspaper Gujarat Samachar, owned by Ahmedabad based late Shri Shantilal Shah family is the 8th highest read newspaper of Maharashtra and 3rd highest read daily of Mumbai. Gujarat Samachar is also the only Gujarati news paper in India’s top-ten language daily list.

In Mumbai, Gujarat Samachar has become third highest read daily after Times of India(English) and Maharashtra Times(Marathi). Gujarat Samachar is enjoying more readership than leading newspapers like Mumbai Mirror, Hindustan Times, DNA, Lokmat, Navbharat Times and all others barring Times of India(English) and Maharashtra Times(Marathi) as per the IRS survey.

In Maharashtra, Gujarat Samachar is on 8th place now pushing Deshonnati to 10th place. Maharashtra’s highest read ten newspapers are (in chronology) Lokmat, Daily Sakal, Pudhari, The Times of India, Punya Nagari, Maharashtra Times, Loksatta, Gujarat Samachar, Mumbai Mirror and Deshonnati. Gujarat Samachar has become only Gujarati newspaper in Maharashtra’a Marathi and English dominated list of top daily newspapers.

As per the IRS Q1 2011 survey, ‘Gujarat Samachar’ has maintained its steady growth on quarter on quarter basis with current AIR at 8.28 lakh as compared to 8.11 lakh readers in IRS Q4 2010 and 6.54 in Q1 2010. Thus, the Gujarati daily had added 27% readers in the state during this year.

In Mumbai, Gujarat Samachar pushed Times of India group’s tabloid daily Mumbai Mirror to fourth rank and replaced it on no.3. Apart from Gujarat and Maharashtra, Gujarat Samachar is also published once a week in digest format in north America where also it enjoys leadership position among Gujarati weeklies.
