2047 ha organic farming nationally,2000 ha in Gujarat only:NHM

Gujarat has excelled in the organic component coverage, a part of the National Horticultural Mission (NHM). Out of the 2047 hectares accounted for the country under organic farming, Gujarat alone accounted for 2000 hectares in the year 2010-2011 as per the NHM data.

Organic farming is the form of agriculture that uses techniques like crop rotation, green manure, compost and biological pest control to maintain soil productivity and control pests in a farm. It does not use fertilizers, pesticides, plant growth regulators such as hormones, livestock antibiotics, food additives and genetically modified organisms.

Gujarat has been ideal in usage of funds under the NHM schemes. The NHM report for the previous year state that Gujarat’s expenditure of the central fund, under the head was 115 %. Against the release of Rs 5497 crores up to February 2011, Gujarat spent a sum of 6351.30 crores, which means the state spent an additional 854 crores.
