Gandhinagar, 12 January, 2012

Remembering one ‘Narendra’ who took birth before 150 years in India, Gujarat Chief Minister today on the occasion of Swami Vivekananda’s 150th birth anniversary said that Gujarat would celebrate this entire anniversary year by giving weightage to skill development among youths.Modi gave away a mantra of skill, will and win to youths present at Mahatma Mandir today to mark 150th birth anniversary of Vivekananda. Modi announced that during the 150th anniversary year of Vivekananda, the state govt would open Vivekananda skill development centre. Modi said, knowledge is important, but skill is more important. Modi said Swami Vivekananda’s inspirational messages and thoughts will be made available to maximum number of youths through social media, shibirs and other programmes during this year.

“He lived just for a short duration of 40 years, but even today he continues to inspire the youths of India. A modern youth wearing jeans, having curly hair will also bow down to Swami Vivekananda’s photo. This is uniqueness of our culture,” Modi said.

He said the government wants to celebrate the occasion because Swami Vivekananda had left some work for us. This task was to make India a ‘Jagad Guru’ of the world.

Modi said spirituality is the soul of this country. Strength of spirituality can fuel progress in this country, he said. Modi recalled how Swami Vivekananda had dared to say that the people of India should bury all other gods to water and should consider only one Maa Bharti as shaktipith. Modi said if we the people of this nation had accepted this appeal of Swami Vivekananda, we could be among the most prosperous nations of the world.

Modi mentioned several examples of Swami Vivekananda’s Gujarat connection. Modi said during his India-wide tour, Swamiji spent maximum time in Gujarat compare to any other state. “He met Shyamji Krishna Varma in Ajmer, he discussed India’s freedom struggle with Nanaji Peshwa when he was in Shihor, he discussed Vedanta with Manishaknar Nabhubhai Dwivedi in Nadiad, he tried to learn shashtra in Porbandar. It was Gujarat’s small place called Jetpur where a station master told Swami Vivekananda about world religion conference of Chicago, and prompted that he should participate in that event,” Modi said adding that the people of Gujarat should be proud of the fact that they touch the dust which was once walked over by Swami Vivekananda.

Modi said, southern town Kanyakumari is famous for its association with Swami Vivekananda due to a monument there, but it was Gujarat’s Somnath on the coast of which Swami Vivekananda had spiritual experience.
