While commissioning a semi-crystalline production plant of Lanxess at central Gujarat’s Jhagadia, Dr Leopold-Theodor Heldman, Consul General of Germany in India said that industry-friendly policies of the Gujarat government and the infrastructure in the state are attracting German companies here.

He also said that he was impressed by the quality of life in Gujarat.

A semi-crystalline unit of Lanxes India, a subsidiary of German chemical group Lanxess will produce high-tech plastics used in auto industry. The company has made an investment of around Rs 490 crore at the site so far.

“By concentrating at our assets in Jhagadia, we are creating a speciality chemicals hub catering to the booming local market and the Asia region, and there is potentially further room at the site for expansion,” Chairman, Board of Management, Lanxess, Axel C Heitmann said.

The crystalline products unit will have capacity of 20,000 metric tonnes per annum, the company said. The company also announced that in addition, the material protection products unit has inaugurated a plant for biocides, which find usage in the construction industry. Rhein Chemie, a subsidiary of Lanxess, has also started up a plant for producing pre-dispersed rubber additive Rhenogran and eco-friendly agent Rhenodiv in Jhagadia, it said.

Rehnogran is used in the manufacturing of tyres and rubber products. The annual combined production capacity of the plant is 2,500 tonnes. Both plants were relocated from a site in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, last year, it said. Lanxess India sales stood at around Rs 1,200 cr in the first nine months of 2011.
