Big trouble for Gujarat Congress ahead of assembly polls
October 21, 2012
Gandhinagar, 21 October 2012
Congress may lose power in Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation(GMC) in few days from now as city Mayor Mahendrasinh Rana has openly started praising Chief Minister Narendra Modi. Rana wrote a letter to Gujarat Congress President praising Narendra Modi’s development drive and criticized Congress party’s promises. Insiders say, Mayor Rana and five other Congress Councillors including standing committee chairmen Mr. Patel who is former BJP man will soon join BJP. This will easily bring BJP to power in GMC.
Gandhinagar is one of the two Municipal Corporations in Gujarat where Congress enjoys power.
Mayor Mahendrasinh Rana had earlier sent a letter to Gujarat Congress President opposing any possible ticket allotment to outsiders in Gandhinagar district. Rana’s letter also reached media offices, after which Congress had threatened actions against him.
Now in another letter to state Congress President, Rana has praised Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and criticized Congress party’s “unrealistic” schemes and “false” promises.
Rana’s term as Mayor of Gandhinagar will end next year. He wants party ticket to contest one of the two Gandhiangar seats, however Congress party is planning to field Narhari Amin and Indravijaysingh Gohil from Gandhinagar. Rana wants to give BJP a try therefore.
To prevent any major setback ahead of the assembly elections, Congress President called Rana for a meeting, but even after the meeting, Rana continues to praise Modi. Congress party also called a meeting of its 17 Councillors in Gandhinagar late in the evening in an attempt to keep them intact.
