BJP in power in Porbandar Municipality

Porbandar, 29 July 2013

Finally Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) is ruling party in Porbandar Municipality. BJP’s Pankaj Majethia today took over as President of Porbandar Municipality. Out of total 42 Councillors, 20 members of BJP, 3 members of Congress and 1 independent member supported BJP. Shri Nilesh Hiralal Kishor was elected as Vice president.

The Urban Development Ministry, Government of Gujarat had early this month filed an affidavit stating reversal of its decision of superseding the elected body of Porbandar Municipality. The Urban Development department of state government had superseded the elected body after the Municipality failed to pass annual budget consequently for three times.

The root of the problem was election verdict in which both BJP and Congress got equal number of seats. Congress somehow managed to show a wafer thin majority and took over the body, but couldn’t pass budget continuously for three times. The Urban Development department then stepped in and superseded the elected body. Even mid-term elections to elect a new body were announced in June. However local unit of Congress had already challenged the decision to supersede the body.

After department reversed its earlier decision, today in a general body meeting, a BJP man was elected as new President unopposed.
