‘I am a true Gujarati by heart and nominee of Gujaratis in Maharashta and in Delhi’

Praful patel, India’s Civil Aviation Minister and a high profile young politician of Sharad pawar’s nationalist congress party is Member of Parliament from state of Maharashtra but he originally hails from Gujarat. ‘A true Gujarati by heart(what he said in his speech)’ Praful patel was recently in Ahmedabad to present Ahmedabad management association’s marketing person of the year award to Narendra Somani(Narendra Somani is in catering business and an hotelier who owns Grand bhagavati hotel in Ahmedabad). Praful patel spoke about range of topics in his speech with frequent use of mother tongue Gujarati in-between.

In his speech, Praful Patel promised that South Gujarat’s Surat airport will be operational from 1st of May, a birthday of political Gujarat state. He said ‘We are in Maharashtra as your nominees and We are also in Delhi as your nominee, and we always take up any issue of Gujarat, whether it is about height of Narmada dam, or any other issue. In coming year you will see Ahmedabad airport will be one of the best airports in the country. You will be flying from Ahmedabad to any part of the world, it is our commitment.’

Praful Patel’s father Manoharbhai patel was born in Nadiad town of Gujarat. Nadiad belongs to Charotar belt of central Gujarat which is known for its tobacco crop. Manoharbhai migrated from Nadiad to Jabalpur in Madhyapradesh, a major centre for Tobaco trade and started his trading business.

After sometime Manoharbhai migrated to Gondia, a town, 165 kilometers away from Nagpur in Maharshtra, near the border of Madhya Pradesh (Gondiya is center point of India) and started his own bidi manufacturing unit. His bidi and tobacco related business flourished here, employing 60000 labors as early as in 1960s. Manoharbhai had close relation with then heavyweight Maharashtra politician Late Shri Vasantdada Patil. Manoharbhai soon started taking interest in politics and won gondia constituency’s assembly election four times .Manoharbhai passed away in 1970. Praful patel was just 14 at that time and was studying in campion school at Mumbai. Along with studies at school, only son of his late father, Prafulbhai had to look after his tobacco business too. He finished his college from sydenham Mumbai with graduation in commerce and at 28 he was elected as a member of Gondia’s municipal council. In 1991 Prafulbhai became parliament member of India from Bhandara district. He was 34 at that time. After this he again was elected to parliament from same constituency continuously for three terms. In 2000 he was elected to Rajyasabha(upper house of Indian parliament). When his mentor Sharad Pawar left Congress party to form Nationalist Congerss Party (NCP), Praful patel too followed him and became India’s Civil Aviation Minister when NCP allied with Congress with participation in government.

Prafulbhai was married to Varsha Patel in 1977. He has three daughters: Avani, Purna Niyati and a son Prajay. His daughter Avani was recently tied with Karnataka based influential Deshpande family’s son Prashant.

Prafulbhai is partner-chairman of Rs. 400 crore Ceejay group (actually a CJ group-that means Chhotabhai Jethalalbhai Patel group) which is involved in tobacco, bidi, pharmaceutical, packaging, finance, real estate etc. businesses). He also runs Gondia education society which has 70 schools and 12 colleges with 80000 students in different faculties.

કેન્દ્રીય નાગરીક ઉડ્ડયન મંત્રી ગુજરાતી પ્રફુલ પટેલનો જન્મતો કોલકતામાં થયો હતો અને તેમનો ઉછેર, વસવાટ, તેમની રાજકીય કારકીર્દી એ બધું મહારાષ્ટ્રમાં ચાલે છે. પરંતુ તેમ છતા આ માણસ અસ્ખલિત ગુજરાતીમાં બોલે છે. ગુજરાતના હિતની હંમેશા ચિંતા કરે છે અને પોતાને ગુજરાતે કહેવામાં ભારે ગૌરવ અનુભવે છે, ત્યારે તેમનું ગુજરાત કનેક્શન શું છે તે આવો જાણીએ.

પ્રફુલભાઈના પિતા મનોહરભાઈ પટેલનો જન્મ નડિયાદમાં થયો હતો.મનોહરભાઈએ ઘણા બધા બીજા ગુજરાતીઓની માફક રોજી રોટી માટે ગુજરાતની બહાર ગમન કર્યું. તેઓ વધારે કંઈ ભણ્યા ન હતા અને બહુજ મહેનતકશ ઈન્સાન હતા.મનોહરભાઈ પહેલા મદ્યપ્રદેશમા વસ્યા.મધ્યપ્રદેશનુ જબલપુર બીડી ઉદ્યોગનું મહત્વનું કેન્દ્ર ગણાય અને મનોહરભઈનું વતન ચરોતર તમાકુનું મોટું કેન્દ્ર ગણાય એટલે ગુજરાતના ચરોતરથી તમાકુ મંગાવીને મનોહરભાઈ તે જબલપુરની મંડીમા વેચતા હતા.પછી મનોહરભાઈએ બીડી બનાવવાનું શરુ કરી દીધું અને મહારાષ્ટ્રના ગોંદીયામાં આવી વસ્યા.ગોંદીયા એ મદ્યપ્રદેશની સરહદે આવેલું નાગપુરથી ૧૬૫ કિલોમીટર દૂર આવેલું મહરાષ્ટ્રનું નગર છે.ગોંદીયા આખા ભારતનું બિલકુલ મધ્યબિંદુ છે.એક્ઝેક્ટ સેન્ટર પોઇન્ટ.૧૯૪૫માં એક ફાઈટર જેટ વિમાને પૂર્વ ભારતમાં બોમ્બમારો કર્યો ત્યારે મનોહરભાઈ ગોંદીયામાં બીડીનું કામ કરતા હતા. તેમને લાગ્યું કે જો આ વિમાન ઉડાવનારાઓને ચિરુટ સપ્લાય કર્યું હોય તો કેવું રહે ? અને તેમણે આ રાહે કામ શરું કર્યું.મનોહરભાઈનો ધંધો ખૂબ સારો ચાલ્યો અને વધતોજ રહ્યો.મનોહરભાઈ આજથી ચાલીસ વર્ષ પહેલાના સમયમાં ગોંદીયામાં પચાસ હજાર સ્થાનિક લોકોને રોજગારી આપતા હતા.મહારાષ્ટ્ર-મધ્યપ્રદેશની હદ પરના નાનકડા નગરમાં વસવ છતાં મનોહરભાઈએ ઘરમાં વાતાવરણ તદ્દન ગુજરાતી રાખ્યું હતું અને વતન નડિયાદની સેવા કરવાનો કોઇ મોકો ક્યારેય પણ છોડ્યો ન હતો.

મનોહરભાઈએ તેમનું તમાકુનું સામ્રાજ્યતો ખડું કર્યુંજ,એ ઉપરાંત રાજકારણમાં પણ ઝુકાવ્યું. તેઓ ગોંદીયાથી ચાર વખત કોંગ્રેસના ધારાસભ્ય તરીકે ચૂંટાયા.વસંતદાદા પાટીલ મનોહરભાઈના ખાસ મિત્ર હતા. ૧૯૭૦માં મનોહરભાઈનું અવસાન થયું ત્યારે પ્રફુલ પટેલની ઉમર ૧૪ વર્ષની હતી. સ્કુલે જવાની ઉંમરે મનોહરભાઈના આ એકના એક દિકરાએ પિતાનો ધંધો સંભાળી લેવો પડ્યો. પ્રફુલભાઈ મુંબઈની કેમ્પિઅન સ્કૂલમાં ભણતા હતા. આ વખતનો એક યાદગાર પ્રસં એવો છે કે એક વખત બેડમિન્ટનની મેચ ચાલતી હતી અને તેને જોવા માટે બેસવાની જગ્યા ન હતી. ત્યારે આગળની હરોળમાં આ મેચ જોવા માટે અભિનેતા અશોક કુમાર બેઠા હતા.સ્કૂલબોય પ્રફુલ પટેલે ત્યારે તેમના મિત્રને કહ્યું હતું કે એક દિવસ તો હું એવો બનીશ કે ફિલ્મ-સ્ટાર્સની સાથે બેસીને મેચ જોતો હઈશ. પ્રફુલભાઈ આ પછી મુંબઈની સીડનહામ કોલેજમાંથી કોમર્સ ગ્રેજુએટ થયા.

પિતાના મિત્ર અને મહારાષ્ટ્રના દિગ્ગજ રાજકારણી વસંતદાદા પાટીલે પ્રફુલ પટેલને યાદ રાખીને તેમને ગોંદીયાની મ્યુનીસીપાલિટીની ચૂંટણી લડાવી ત્યારે પ્રફુલભાઈની ઉંમર ૨૮ વર્ષની હતી. આ પછી ૩૪ વર્ષની ઉંમરે ૧૯૯૧માં પ્રફુલ પટેલ મહારાષ્ટ્રના ભંડારાની બેઠક પરથી પ્રથમ વખત ભારતની લોકસભા માટે ચૂંટાયા.આ પછી તેઓ અહીંથી જ ત્રણ વખત લોકસભામાં ચૂંટાયા બાદ ૨૦૦૦ના વર્ષમાં રાજ્યસભામાં ચૂંટાયા.શરદ પવાર સાથેના ઘનીષ્ઠ સંબંધોને કારણે પ્રફુલભાઈ શરદ પવારે સ્થાપેલી નેશનાલીસ્ટ કોંગ્રેસ પાર્ટીમાં જોડાયા અને કેન્દ્રીય મંત્રી બન્યા.

પ્રફુલભાઈની ગોંદીયા એજ્યુકેશન સોસાયટીની સીત્તેર સ્કૂલો અને ૧૨ કોલેજમાં અલગ અલગ ફેકલ્ટીમાં કુલ મળીને એંશી હજારથી વધારે વિદ્યાર્થીઓ ભણી રહ્યા છે.પ્રફુલ પટેલ ચારસો કરોડ રુપીયાના સીજે ગ્રુપ(તમાકુ, હેલ્થ કેર, રીયલ એસ્ટેટ, ફાઈનાન્સ પેકેજીંગ વગેરે ક્ષેત્રોમાં કાર્યરત છોટાભાઈ જેઠાલાલ પટેલ ગ્રુપ)ના ભાગીદાર-ચેરમેન છે.

પ્રફુલભાઈના લગ્ન ૧૯૭૭માં વર્ષા પટેલ સાથે થયા હતા.તેઓને ચાર સંતાનો, પુત્ર પ્રજય અન દીકરીઓ અવની, નિયતી અને પૂર્ણા છે. અવનીના લગ્ન કર્ણાટકના રાજકારણી, ઉધોગપતિ આર.વી.દેશપાંડેના પુત્ર પ્રશાંત સાથે થયા છે.
