ઉતરાણના દિવસે બપોરે મેં અમદાવાદના વસ્ત્રાપુર સ્થિત વન ચેતના કેન્દ્રમાં જોયેલુ દ્રશ્ય યુદ્ધ જેવુ હતુ. જેમ યુદ્ધ સમયે કાર્યરત હોસ્પિટલમાં એક પછી એક ઘવાયેલા દર્દીઓ આવતા જ રહેતા હોય છે અને ઓપરેશન થિયેટર ધમધમતા હોય છે, બિલકુલ એવી જ પરિસ્થિતિ અહીં હતી. જો કે ફર્ક એટલો માત્ર હતો કે ઘવાઈને નિરંતર આવતા રહેતા દર્દીઓ તરીકે અહીં માણસો નહીં પણ પક્ષીઓ હતા.
ઉતરાણમાં દોરાથી કપાઈને હજારો પક્ષીઓ અપંગ થાય છે અને મોતને ભેટે છે એ વાત સૌથી પહેલા મેં મારા પાડોશમાં એક ગીધ દોરાથી કપાઈને પડ્યુ હતુ ત્યારે ગુજરાત સમાચારમાં લખી હતી. ઉતરાણ અને પક્ષીઓને ઈજા એ વિષય ત્યારે સૌપ્રથમ વખત પ્રકાશમાં આવ્યો હતો. પછી તો બીજા વર્ષે જીવદયા મંડળીઓ દ્વારા આ માટે કામ શરૂ થયુ હતુ અને પછીતો ઉતરાણ પર અમદાવાદની એનિમલ હેલ્પ ફાઉન્ડેશન સંસ્થા દ્વારા ખાસ વિદેશથી ડોક્ટરોની ટીમ આવીને પક્ષીઓ માટે તાત્કાલિક સારવાર કેન્દ્ર ચલાવતી હતી. એનિમલ હેલ્પ ફાઉન્ડેશન હમણા બંધ પડ્યુ છે તેથી આ વર્ષે જંગલ ખાતાએ પાંચ સ્વૈચ્છિક સંસ્થાઓ સાથે મળીને અમદાવાદના વસ્ત્રાપુરમાં પક્ષીઓ માટે તાત્કાલિક સારવાર કેન્દ્ર ઉભુ કર્યુ. આમાં સેવા આપવા શ્રીલંકા અને સિંગાપુરથી મહિલા ડોક્ટરો આવ્યા. આ ઉપરાંત અમદાવાદના વેટરનરી ડોક્ટરો પણ આમાં જોડાયા. તો સોથી વધુ યુવાનોએ ઉતરાણની મસ્તી છોડીને અહીં પક્ષીઓની સેવામાં વોલન્ટીયરીંગ કરીને સેવા બજાવી. જૈન ભાઈઓ પણ આ કામમાં ખડે પગે જોડાયા હતા.
પતંગથી કપાયેલા પક્ષીઓ અહીં નિરંતર આવતા રહેતા હતા. કોઈક એને બૂટના ખોખામાં લઈને આવે, કોઈક પક્ષીઓને થેલીમાં લઈને આવે. આવનાર પક્ષીની અહીં રજિસ્ટરમાં નોંધ થાય. તેને ટેગ લગાવવામાં આવે. અને પછી બાસ્કેટમાં મૂકવામાં આવે. ઓપરેશનમાં જવા માટે ઘાયલ પક્ષીઓની કતાર એટલી મોટી હતી કે અનેક ઘાયલ પક્ષીઓએ વેઈટીંગમાં રહેવુ પડતુ હતુ. ઓપરેશન થિયેટર ઉતરાણ અને આસપાસના દિવસોએ રાતના બે વાગ્યા સુધી બીઝી રહ્યુ હતુ. ઘાયલ પક્ષીની પાંખ ના છૂટકે કાપી નાખવી પડે એમ હોય ત્યારે ડોક્ટરોની આંખમાં ઝળઝળિયા આવી જતા હતા.
ખાસ કરીને કબૂતરો તથા સમડીઓ ઘવાઈને આવી હતી. એ ઉપરાંત મોર, ચામાચિડીયા, બ્લેક આઈબીસ, ઘુવડ જેવા પક્ષીઓ પણ આવ્યા હતા.પક્ષીઓને સારવાર બાદ લોનમાં પાંજરા મૂકીને બનાવવામાં આવેલા આઈસીયુમાં દાખલ કરવામાં આવતા હતા. આઈસીયુ મંડપમાં ભુ કરવામં આવ્યુ હતુ. કૂતરા બિલાડી ન પહોંચી જાયે તે માટે ચોકીદાર બેસાડવામાં આવ્યા હતા. જે પક્ષીઓ સંપૂર્ણ નોર્મલ થઈ જાય એમને જે વિસ્તારમાંથી લાવવામાં આવ્યા હતા ત્યાં જ છોડી મૂકાશે જ્યારે અપંગ પક્ષીઓને કાગડા, બિલાડી ખાઈ ન જાય એ માટે તેમને ગાંધીનગરના ઈન્દ્રોડા ઉદ્યાનમાં અપંગ પક્ષીઓ માટેના સુરક્ષિત પિંજરામાં લઈ જવામાં આવશે. વડોદરામાં ઉતરાણ નિમીત્તે પક્ષીઓને બચાવવા મુંબઈની કરૂણા સંસ્થાની ટીમ એમ્બ્યુલન્સ સહિત આવી હતી. વડોદરામાં પતંગના દોરાથી કપાયેલા પક્ષીઓની ખાસ સ્મશાનયાત્રા કાઢવામાં આવી અને તેમને ચિતા પર સંપૂર્ણ વિધિ પ્રમાણે અગ્નિસંસ્કાર આપવામાં આવ્યા. આવુ લોકોમાં જાગૃતિ ફેલાવવા માટે કરવામાં આવ્યુ.
મુસ્લિમોમાં બકરઈદનો તહેવાર એવો છે કે લાખો જીવોની બેરોકટોક ઓફિશીયલ અને ગૌરવભેર કતલ થાય છે. આપણો ધર્મ હિંદુ છે. આપણે બેરહમ અને સંસ્કારનિર્લજ્જ બની શકીએ નહી. આપણે આપણા તહેવાર દ્વારા જો આ રીતે નિર્દોષ પક્ષીઓની સામૂહિક કતલ થતી હોય તો તે મામલે કોઈક રસ્તો ચોક્કસ વિચારવો જોઈએ અને આવતી ઉતરાણ પહેલા તેનો અમલ પણ કરી દેવો જોઈએ. સૌથી પહેલુ કામ તો એ છે કે સરકારે કાચવાળી, હીરાકણી વાળી, કેમીકલ વાળી પાકી માંજા દોરી પર પ્રતિબંધ લાદવો જોઈએ. કાચ અને કેમીકલ મિશ્રીત દોરી તથા આ વખતે બજારમાં આવેલી અસ્ત્રા જેવી ચાઈનીસ દોરી માત્ર પક્ષીઓ માટે જ નહી પરંતુ માણસો માટે પણ ખતરનાક છે તેના પર કડક પ્રતિબંધ મૂકવાનુ શૌર્ય સરકારે બતાવવુ જોઈએ. કોઈ પણ સુધરેલા દેશમાં આવા ખતરનાક ખેલ ચાલી શકેં.સેફટી સ્ટાન્ડર્ડ નામની ચીજ તો હોવી જોઈએ ને?
બે પૈડાના વાહનો ચલાવનારાઓ માટે ઉતરાણના ગાળામાં વાહન લઈને નીકળવુ ખતરનાક નીવડતુ હોય છે( આ વખતે ઉતરાણ પર સુરતના વરાછા ઓવરબ્રીજ પર બે પૈડાના વાહનો માટે પ્રતિબંધ મૂકવામાં આવ્યો હતો કારણકે ઓવરબ્રીજ હાઈટ પર હોવાથી ઘણા લોકોના પતંગની દોરીથી ગળા કપાતા હોય છે). આવામાં ઘાતક દોરી પર સરકારે આવતી ઉતરાણની સીઝનથી લાગુ પડે એ રીતે પ્રતિબંધ લગાવી દેવો જોઈએ. એક માત્ર આપણી જ સરકાર આ રીતે લોકોના ગળા કપાતા હોય ને જોયા કરે એવી હોઈ શકે. વિચારો અમેરિકામાં ડઝન માણસો પતંગની દોરીથી મરે તો શું કરે ત્યાંની સરકાર ? તાત્કાલિક પગલા લે, બાન મૂકે અને ઘાતક દોરી બનાવવાનુ કામ કડક રીતે બંધ કરે. અમેરિકાના પ્રોડક્ટ સેફટી સ્ટાન્ડર્ડ અદભૂત છે. કાચી દોરીથી પતંગ ચગાવવાથી કોઈની ઉતરાણની મજા બગડવાની નથી. સરકાર ઘાતક દોરી પર પ્રતિબંધ મૂકે તો ગુજરાતીઓ તેને ચોક્કસ આવકારશે. કારણકે ગુજરાતીઓ સાઉદી અરેબીયન નથી, ઉતરાણ એ પક્ષીઓની બકરઈદ નથી. ઉતરાણનું પર્વ ગાયોને ચારો ખવડાવવાનું પર્વ છે એ રીતે જીવદયાનું પર્વ છે, ઉતરાણનું પર્વ મકર રાશિમાં પ્રવેશેલા સૂર્યને માણવા છત પર ચડવાનુ છે એ રીતે પર્યાવરણનું મિત્ર પર્વ છે. પક્ષીઓને અને માણસોને ઘાતક દોરીના ઘા પહોંચતા હોય ત્યાં જીવદયા અને પર્યાવરણ પ્રરત્વેના ઉદ્દાત પર્વનો મહિમા સચવાતો નથી. ફોટામાં: અમદાવાદના વસ્ત્રાપુર વન ચેતના કેન્દ્રના આઈસીયુમાં સારવાર બાદ આરામ કરી રહેલી ઘાયલ સમડીઓ

Manja clipped their wings
Ahmedabad: “Kaipo chhe” maybe a famous cry that rents the air on Uttarayan. But for the birds in the sky, it meant death and suffering. As Gujarat enjoyed the kite festival on Monday, winged creatures, many of them of the endangered species, dropped from the sky, dead or grievously injured by the deadly manja.
Of the 562 injured birds brought to the Van Chetna Kendra in Ahmedabad on Monday, where NGOs and doctors joined hands to treat birds, about 90 died. Surat reported 93 injuries and Vadodara about 100.
There were heart rending scenes at the Van Chetna Kendra, as birds entangled in manja, throats slit, wings split open and bodies bathed in blood were brought in.
Similar scenes were witnessed in rescue centres in Rajkot, Vadodara and Surat. The injured list included birds of critically endangered, endangered and rare species, including the Indian whitebacked vulture, Egyptian vulture, night herons, barn owls, yellow-footed green pigeons and pariah kites.
“The injured birds had mainly ruptured wings and deep and superficial cuts on their ligaments,” said RJ Kumar from Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History, who was in Ahmedabad on Monday.
“A safe Uttarayan is all that we needed. We have found that those birds that got entangled in manja without the deadly glass powder could be saved,” said Darshan Desai of Prayas, an NGO based in Surat.

Ahmedabad: The deadly manja killed three persons even as seven others were killed while chasing kites, across cities while celebrating Uttarayan over Monday and Tuesday.
The deadly manja also slit the throat of Bipin Patel, 32, a resident of Odhav, Ahmedabad, on Tuesday morning when he was passing the Soni Ni Chali on his motorcyle. He was rushed to the LG Hospital where he succumbed at 1 pm.
In the Swaminarayan temple in Jetalpur, outside Ahmedabad, 60-year-old Sandipsinh Mahida toppled off the roof while flying kites on Monday. He was declared dead in the Civil Hospital. Not so safe Uttarayan for Amdavadis Razor-Sharp Manja Leaves One Dead, Hundreds Injured
Ahmedabad: It all starts with a sudden feeling of a strange warmth on your throat. If you ignore it for more than a few seconds, you could never live to see the morrow! Manja, the razor-sharp kite string laced with glass powder, has cut many throats this Uttarayan — one proving to be fatal and countless others were near-fatal.
Bipin Patel, 32, is no more. Manja cut his throat as he drove his bike past the Soni Ni Chali. He was rushed to the LG Hospital, but the cut was too deep. LG Hospital medical superintendent RG Surela, said, “The biker could not take the kite line out in time and it further knotted around his throat when he did try to get it out in a haste. The kite flier not knowing the damage it was causing kept pulling at the string, deepening the cut further. His wound was deep and much blood was lost before he was brought to the hospital.”
Ramesh Thakor, 36, resident of Prakashnagar, Matar, did not have anything to do with kite flying, yet manja drew his blood. He was in Ahmedabad to attend an ailing relative who had been admitted to the Civil Hospital. On Monday afternoon when he was driving from Sardar bridge to Jamalpur, the killer manja floated down towards him. Before Thakor could stop his vehicle, the manja had made a deep incision on his throat and he fell from his bike, on the road. He was later admitted to VS Hospital.
Rajesh Mahor, 22 had run out of
kites and decided to make a quick trip to a kite market in Vejalpur on his bike. On way back home, with a friend riding pillion, holding freshly-procured kites his bike skidded as he tried to avoid a truck. The bikers fell and the truck ran them over. Rajesh died while his friend was admitted to a hospital with grievous injuries.
The luckiest of the lot was Mohammed Salamat Ansari, 8, resident of Sodagar ni pol, Kalupur. It happened: His eyes fixed on a big red kite floating down towards the adjoining terrace, he tried to catch it with his stick but it was still out of his reach. He stretched himself out and fell from the terrace.
Lady luck smiled on him and he escaped with minor injuries – the building was not too high and then he landed on a pile of clothes. Three cuts on his elbow and a bruised arm, were his only worries.
With the number of incidents it proved to be a busy day for the emergency ambulance services. “We were on our toes the whole day, attending to 300 calls on Monday alone. Most of these were minor cuts and injuries but 50-60 cases were serious in nature and the victims had to be rushed to hospitals. On Tuesday, we received 30 calls till 2 pm,” said Manan Shah of 108 Emergency Services.

Indian white rumped vulture: It has down feathers on head and neck, very broad wings, short tail and
white neck ruff. The adult’s whitish back contrasts with the otherwise dark plumage. As it is rarer than previously believed, its conservation status was re-assessed from least concerned to near threatened in 2007.

A small vulture, it’s found in southwestern Europe, northern Africa and Southern Asia. It is the only living member of genus Neophron. In Southern Asia, like India, this species is called Scavenger Vulture.

Night heron:
Night Heron has nocturnal feeding habits and croaking crow-like call. Medium-sized, these migrate outside the tropical parts of their ranges. Adults are shortnecked, short-legged and stout with a dark crown and back, remaining part of the body being white or grey. Barn owl (Tyto alba): One of the most widespread of all birds, it is also referred to as Common Barn Owl to distinguish it from other species in the Barn Owl family.
Yellow footed green pigeon (Treron phoenicoptera): Found in South Asia, it feeds on fruits found on different trees, especially Ficus. They forage in flocks. In the early morning they are often seen sunning on the tops of emergent trees in dense forest areas.

Kite string kills boy before Uttarayana
Ahmedabad, December 27 Uttarayana might still be more than a fortnight away, but the kite flying festival has already started posing a threat to people’s lives. Six-year-old Jayesh Rabari became the first victim when a stray kite string slit his throat, leaving him bleeding profusely. He later died on the way to the hospital.
The freak accident took place outside Jayesh’s residence in Rushap Apartment on Premchand Nagar road in the city. A senior KG student of Anand Vidhyalaya in Bodakdev, Jayesh was busy playing with his friend, when the string slit his throat. “Jayesh immediately fell on the ground. His friends panicked and came running to us. We rushed Jayesh to a private nursing home, but it was too late by then,” said Vijay Rabari, Jayesh’s cousin. Jayesh was the youngest member of the family. His father, Bijal and mother, Champa are in a state of shock.
Uttarayana (Makar Sankranti), which will be celebrated on January 14, has often been marred by several instances of kite strings causing deaths and injuries to people and birds across the state. People generally coat their kite strings with powdered glass and starch in a bid to sever other kite twines.
It is really sad that even at this age we still haven’t understood the value of innocent lives (human as well as birds). If you have any idea about legally how to take this matter further with the government, please take some initiative or if you know someone has already started taking some steps please pass on the info. here and I am sure most of us who are deshgujarat readers and fans and many more will support this cause to make our Gujarat a better and safer place for the living beings.

Nice article. but sadly the message gets lost every uttarayan. Hats off to those who served these birds. I could not take such moral high ground and could not put a ban on uttrayan joy but still did a little by flying kites only during the afternoons and for an hour in the evening this time. striking a balance between joy and saving innocent life is important.
In all religion life comes first and we should standardise Patang festival and now this is the time for doing that. As we know every day Ahmedabad and every other citys are growing dramatically with poeple, animals and birds. If our festival is causing problem to other life then we need to turn it in a good way. I don’t think Makarashankranti is festival of Kites but people made it that way for their romanch (Janoon) of kites. I am 100% sure that Janoon always cause problem to others so we must take some action with buying a string which is not harmful to our finger as well as other’s neck. Please come forward by your own if government is not doing anything then we can do it , after all people makes government. I am daring everybody to come forward and pass this to your friend also. Turn the message from “Kaipo Che…” to “Kapaoo Che..”

This is a biased propaganda against hindus and everything that is Indian in origin. Every hindu festival is being mocked by media. When there is Diwali, the foreign funded media cries about pollution. When there is Uttarayan, the media cries about bird killing.
