In wall city area of Ahmedabad, hundreds of residents in several housing clusters can’t sleep. The reason… hungry rodents ransack their houses, ravaging everything, edible or not.

To end this menace, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has deployed troops of cats. The AMC sees the pilot project beginning to show results.

Z.A. Sacha, Deputy Municipal Commissioner says: “Ever since we began the use of cats, the percentage of small holes (burrows in which the rats live) that used to be around 90 to 100 have come down to 20 or 30. The awareness among people is also growing. Earlier, they (House owners) used to throw waste or food leftovers outside their homes, so the rats had plenty of food available. Therefore, their numbers too increased.”

Ramesh Nagar, a local resident, was very vocal about the rodents. He says “The ground in the housing area has stones in it. Rats have furrowed tunnels inside the ground. They keep roaming throughout the night and disturb the locals. Even the dogs that run after these rats as big as rabbits are scared of them. This problem should be solved now as cats have been deployed to drive the rats away.”

The situation has improved tremendously, thanks to the cat troopers as well as a cleanliness drive and a mouse trapping project.
