Gujarat’s 17th century Ahmedabad based poet and reformer Akho bhagat’s statue was inaugurated on 7th of May, 2008 at Ahmedabad’s Desai ni pol in Khadia locality. Desai ni pol has a narrow street named as ‘Akha Bhagat no Khancho’. Akha Bhagat spent his life here.

Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s Heritage cell conceptualized and implemented Akha Bhagat statue and chawk project. Expenses for this man size statue were sponsored by Soni Shri Pranjivan Virjibhai and Zaverilal Virjibhai from Zaveri and company (Rajkotwala). Chief Minister Shri Narendrabhai Modi inaugurated this statue.

“The statue weighs 700 Kg. It includes three dimensional image of the poet and a two dimensional backdrop of his shop,” said Ratilal Kansodaria, the sculptor who has created the monument. Kansodaria says, “We did not have any picture of Akho but I studied the thesis written by Great Gujarati author Shri Uma Shankar Joshi and based the image on the description given in the matedial. I have tried to bring life in Akha poet’s sculpture and match it with the contemporary environment. That is the reason I fitted it with the background of his shop. Statue has been kept at the floor level so that people can have a feeling of being with the port”

Akha Bhagat, a 17th century poet and philosopher, spoke fearlessly against blind beliefs and used satire to hit the orthodox lifestyle of the society in his times. Akha’s philosophy and his Chhappas(six line stanzas) became very popular all over the world. The sharp wit of Akha’s stanzas in Gujarati language spread sparks of light in the morally debased and socially dark atmosphere of the 17th century Gujarat by delivering the message of putting an end to religious sham and hypocrisy.

સત્તરમી સદીના સુધારાવાદી કવિ અખા ભગતના પૂતળાનું સાત મે, ૨૦૦૮ના રોજ નરેન્દ્ર મોદીએ અનાવરણ કર્યું. પૂતળુ ખાડિયાની દેસાઈની પોળના અખા ભગતના ખાંચા બહાર છે. અખા ભગત આ ખાંચામાં જ રહેતા હતા. આ પૂતળુ નજરાણુ છે મ્યુનિસિપલ કોર્પોરેશનના હેરિટેજ વિભાગનું. પૂતળાનો ખર્ચ ઉઠાવી લીધો છે રાજકોટવાળા ઝવેરી એન્ડ કંપનીના સોની પ્રાણજીવન વીરજીભાઈ અને ઝવેરીભાઈ વીરજીભાઈએ.

પૂતળુ બનાવનાર શિલ્પિ રતિલાલ કન્સોદરિયા કહે છે કે અખાનું ચિત્ર ઉપલબ્ધ હતુ નહી તેથી ઉમાશંકર જોષીએ અખાનું વર્ણન આપ્યું છે તે આધારે શિલ્પ બનાવ્યું છે. પૂતળાની પાછળ ટુ ડાયમેન્શનમાં અખાની સોનીની દુકાન પણ દર્શાવી છે. લોકો અખા સાથે સંબંધ ધરાવી શકે એ માટે અખાને ફ્લોર લેવલે ગોઢવ્યા છે.
