Ahmedabad, DeshGujarat

Sarus crane is world’s tallest bird that can fly. You can watch it just near Ahmedabad at distance of some 1 hour drive, provided that you have an experienced guiding person with you, great love for nature in heart, and a good binocular.

Since 1998, every year on 21st of June Saras crane’s census is held in India. Ahmedabad’s noted environmentalist Rajesndrasing Jadeja organizes a tour under the banner of Sundarvan for children and interested young ones around 21st of June to survey Saras cranes near Kheda and to spread awareness about it every year. Before some years, probably in 2003, 125 Sarus cranes were spotted near Kheda in such trip. One day Sarus watch trip this year is organized on 22nd of June.

Population of sarus cranes in Gujarat is continuously decreasing and is under severe threat, because of conflicts with farmers, electric overhead wirings and various other reasons. Sarus birds tend to build nests in paddy fields and in the course of nesting they uproot some part of crop. Farmers therefore dislike sarus in their fields.

Tall grey bird with siren like loud voice, red color around eyes, and grand flight every time when human presence is closer, Sarus crane is worth watching in its natural habitat.
