Indian chief minister visits Uganda
Monday, 17th November, 2008

By Kiganda Ssonko

THE chief minister of Gurajarat in India, Narendra Modi, arrived in Uganda yesterday with a delegation to look at investment opportunities.

Narendra, who was received at Entebbe International Airport by foreign affairs minister Sam Kutesa, the Indian Association chairman, Naren Mehta and dozens of Indian businessmen, was invited by President Yoweri Museveni.

Mehta said Narendra, who is on a one-day visit, would meet the President and also address the Indian community in Uganda.

He said the visit would strengthen the relationship between Uganda and India and also open investments prospects.
“President Museveni’s biggest interest is to attract investors in Uganda,” Mehta said.

He said the business delegation accompanying Narendra would interact with Ugandan businessmen to discuss possible investment ventures.

Gujarat is a state in western India with a population of about 55 million people. It controls some of the largest businesses in India, with major agricultural produces like cotton, groundnuts, peanuts, sugar cane and diary products. It also deals in industrial products like cement and petrol.

Narendra, who became the state’s chief minister in 2001, has transformed the state socially and economically.

India to increase trade with Uganda

Martin Ssebuyira
Entebbe

The visiting Chief Minister of Gujarati City in India Honorable Narendra Modi has said he will work hard to strengthen trade relations between Uganda and India.

According to Mr Patel Ramanlal, a member of the Indian community in Uganda, the Minister is supposed to meet President Museveni and various Ugandan-Indian businessmen to promote bi-lateral trade between the two countries.

“He has come with 25 industrialists and Indian international businessmen to look for investment opportunities in Uganda,” Mr Ramanlal told the Daily Monitor upon arrival at Entebbe International Airport yesterday.

The visit comes shortly after Mr Museveni visited India to attend the India-Africa Summit where he invited Indian investors to Uganda to help add value to Uganda’s natural resources, provide affordable goods and services and increase local production to meet the demands of the low and middle class consumer markets.

Minister Narendra who arrived on a chartered plane was received by Foreign Affairs Minister Sam Kuteesa.</description>
