IMD predicts rain in Gujarat this week
Ahmedabad, 26 August, 2009
Desperately waiting for rain, Gujarat has a news to cheer — the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) is expecting moderate to heavy rainfall in northern and southern parts of the state in coming two days.
A statement from the IMD said upper air circulation extending from 0.9 to 2.1 km above sea level has developed over south-west Rajasthan which is expected to bring rainfall to the Saurashtra and Kutch region of Gujarat.
However, no port warnings or cautionary notes have been issued to fishermen in the western and southern Gujarat. Wind velocity would be 15-25 knots Wednesday and Thursday in Gujarat coast, the Met Office said.
According to the State Control Room monitoring the rainfall situation across Gujarat, rainfall measuring between one to four inches lashed Surat and Valsad regions Tuesday and Wednesday.
If the monsoon remains active, farmers in 11 of the 26 districts which received less than 40 percent rainfall since July 27 would be able to start a fresh round of sowing, an official said.
Meanwhile in a latest development, Gujarat’s Panchamahal district witnessed good amount of rain today.
