LAHORE: A gathering of religious scholars, mostly from the Barelvi school of thought, held on Sunday to mark the chehlum of Dr Sarfraz Naeemi demanded surprise raids on all seminaries and a ban on their funding from abroad.

‘Surprise raids should be conducted on all seminaries, whether large or small, being run by all schools of thought (to recover arms stockpiled there and to arrest terrorists hiding there),’ said a resolution adopted at the gathering.

It also called for a probe into foreign funding of seminaries and a law to ban direct financing.

Through another resolution, the scholars called for an effective ban on leaders and workers of proscribed outfits from working under the cover of new names and banners. They also demanded cancellation of declarations of papers and journals published by such groups.

Earlier, the event witnessed a somewhat ugly incident when Pir Afzal Qadri, a leader of Barelvi group, accused Jamaat-i-Islami leaders attending the event of supporting the Taliban and opposing the army operation in Swat. He said the party was also against the creation of Pakistan.

However, organisers of the event removed Mr Qadri from the podium by force.

Later, some JI leaders claimed that their party had always condemned terrorism, killing of innocent people and desecration of Shia and Barelvi graves.

They praised timely intervention by organisers to foil what they called a conspiracy aimed at sowing disunity among Muslims.
