Deshgujarat Team,
After reading the news "Police attacked in Ahmedabad’s Shahpur while rescuing calves"
and then reading the responses, it is clearly evident that the comments that have been posted to this piece of news is not in relation with the news.

Is this a mistake by Deshgujarat? the news is about police being attacked in Shapur and the comments posted are talking about a french movie DistrictB13 and than a long comment about "BONDED LABOR"

Please remove the unrelated comments.
It would have been much better if proper review was done before posting comments.

Hope to get a prompt remedial action.
Jai Jai Garvi Gujarat

These people are unbelievably hot-headed! There are always miscreants everywhere and the job of the police is to get them under control by making sure they are appropriately punished. I hope, all the while aware that it is really unlikely, that these 50 are punished and face jail time. And I hope there will be no fatwa from central gov to let these folks go. They should at least be black listed for police, armed forces and other gov jobs. There is no justification in throwing our precious resources down these drains.

.What Begum Teesatabibi Setlewad the secular fighter never acknowledges about Muslim actrocities on millions of Hindus in Pakistan is not of interest to OBAMA administration.
Read it yourself.
HYDERABAD: A three-member delegation of US diplomats here on Tuesday met senior police officers of Hyderabad region to have an update on the issue of bonded labour.

This is the first direct meeting between US diplomats and police management of Hyderabad region held at DIG office.

They discussed the issue with special reference to Umerkot, Mirpurkhas, Sanghar and the suburbs of Hyderabad district.

The DPOs of Umerkot, Mirpurkhas, Sanghar and Hyderabad attended the meeting chaired by Dr Amir Shaikh, the DIG Mirpurkhas, who is holding additional charge of DIG Hyderabad.

Visiting US officials included Daniel Rogers, Ms Dawn Schrepel, Ms Sarah Simons and Ms Masooma from UC consulate general Karachi.

‘It’s a delegation from the US State Department which is keen to have first-hand information on bonded labour issue that has been highlighted in local as well as international media,’ said Dr Amir Shaikh while speaking in presence of American officials.

He said that the American officials had appreciated police efforts towards the solution of that issue.

The acting DIG said that the foreign officials were interested in helping out government functionaries and police authorities at their own level.

NGOs’ representatives who work on bonded labour issue also attended the meeting.

Briefing the diplomats, the acting DIG referred to different forms of bonded labour, including haris in bondage, kiln workers and those working in stone crushing factories.

The US officials outright refused to respond to queries of media personnel and acting DIG claimed that he was briefing media on the officials’ behalf.

‘They are not authorised to speak to media as their own press sections deals with such

A study conducted recently by the Mirpurkhas police has found that since January this year, 648 bonded labourers have been recovered by the police and liberated by the courts. However, no investigations have been conducted against landlords, and no one has been brought to book.
The report says that upon being freed, such labourers do not come forward to lodge formal complaints — despite the Bonded Labour System (Abolition) Act 1992, which treats forced labour as a cognisable offence. It also notes that the practice is prohibited under the constitution, and debts or advances used as a pretext for enslaving people are legally void.

Bonded labour is a continuing scourge in many parts of the country. It is therefore imperative that the justice machinery be moved against the offenders. The police observation that freed labourers do not register FIRs against their persecutors is not surprising when the power wielded by landlords and others over uneducated labourers is taken into consideration. A large-scale campaign is needed to make rural communities aware of their rights and possible legal recourse. Workers must be armed with knowledge and the support of the police so that they can take active steps towards bringing to book landlords who retain bonded labour.

It must be kept in mind, however, that important landlords wield considerable influence over the justice systems in their areas. Required, therefore, is an investigation into whether freed labourers are discouraged in any way against lodging FIRs. In terms of ending bonded labour, putting the onus on the workers is tantamount to passing the buck; the police department must look inwards and examine whether there have been any refusals to register FIRs. Furthermore, police officials in rural areas must be sensitised to the issue and encouraged to put before freed labourers the option of registering a criminal case.
