Science day: Cairn India demonstrates Science Van at PDPU

Ahmedabad, 28 February 2012

National Science Day is celebrated in India on February 28 every year to mark the discovery of Raman Effect by Sir C.V. Raman. In an effort to popularize the benefits of scientific knowledge and practical appropriation; 28th February is celebrated as National Science Day (NSD).

Oil and Gas major Cairn India has always been a pioneer in implementing state of the art technologies across its working areas and assets, and for the benefit of the community residing near its work areas.

In October 2011, Cairn India launched Mobile Health Van and Science Van in Gujarat.

Mobile Science Van
As reported in Rajya Sabha recently, at least 58 out of every 100 students who are enrolled in schools in Gujarat failed to make it to high school — that represents the 16th highest dropout rate in the country. Oil exploration major Cairn India, as a part of its commitment towards fuelling education assistance to the rural kids has partnered with Agastya to launch Science Van on wheels i.e. Mobile Science Van which will help to catalyse local schools and educators to improve content on science subject and quality education for rural children and teachers.

Children are able to relate better to concepts explained through interactive demonstrations rather than through rote learning. Through various scientific models available at van, rural kids will take an understanding of various scientific experiments on the van and which will enable rural kids to have a hand on experience of scientific experiments and its results. The van on an average will provide exposure to more than 2500 school kids every month.

Mobile science van is vehicle manned by a driver and two instructors that carry experiments and capable of travelling long distances even to remote schools to exhibit concepts and involve children and teachers in hands-on science. The Agastya instructors teach scientific concepts through simple and innovative experiments.

Cairn India and its Partners Agastya demonstrated all models in Science Fair at PDPU 28th February 2012. Students from schools of Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad visited the same.

Energy is an important concern that differentiates the social and economic inequalities. All conventional sources of energy are exhaustible. Development of conventional forms of energy growing needs is the main interest of research these days. Since millions of years pollution free and efficient energy sources have been matter of serious concerns. In view of this all activities based on theme “Sources of Energy and it’s environmental concerns,” which includes resources as coal, lignite, natural gas, crude oil, biogas, wind power, hydrothermal, solar, nuclear and tidal energy etc. The idea is to spread awareness about renewable energy sources and their effect on environment.
