Ahmedabad, 14 June 2012

Former Gujarat chief minister Shankersinh Vaghela on Wednesday took over as the chairman of India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC), the PSU under tourism ministry. With Vaghela’s appointment, ITDC Chairman and Managing Director Lalit Panwar becomes Vice Chairman-cum-Managing Director of the PSU.

Appointment of Vaghela, also a former union minister, as part-time chairman of ITDC was approved by the Appointment Committee of Cabinet (ACC) on May 31.

Trinamool Congress leader and minister of state for tourism Sultan Ahmed had opposed the decision to appoint Vaghela as ITDC chairman.

ITDC offers accommodation, catering, transport, duty free shopping, entertainment, publicity, consultancy, manpower training as well as hospitality education.

Talking about the corporation’s plans Vaghela said the public sector undertaking is currently talking to various state governments from the region to acquire properties. “Our plan is to open small hotels, similar to those of motels in the US. These hotels may not be big and five-star properties but smaller ones and may be of three-star or four-star hotels,” Vaghela said.
