NRI Gujarati woman held in U.K. for stealing duty free goods from airport
Crawley, Britain 24 June 2012
A CRAWLEY woman has been found guilty of stealing more than £30,000 worth of duty free goods and jewellery from Gatwick airport, police said.
Hanishapriya Patel, 24, from Rushetts Road, Langley Green, appeared at Hove Crown Court on Monday (June 11).
Police said they found a quantity of duty free items and Monsoon and Accessorize items amounting to more than £30,000 at her home.
At an earlier hearing in February, Patel, who worked at World Duty Free and Accessorize at Gatwick between April 2010 and March 2011, pleaded guilty to theft of items from the jewellery store, but denied theft of the duty free goods.
Following an eight day trial Patel was found guilty of theft from World Duty Free and converting criminal property, by selling stolen items, on Ebay.
Detective Tony Dadoma of Gatwick CID said: “During the investigation we discovered that Patel had been abusing her position in the shop to steal items and then place them for sale on Ebay. The sales amounted to over £8,000.”
She is due to be sentenced on July 9.
