Cheaper gas to Gujarat: First political, then legal and now “technical” issue

Ahmedabad, 2 December 2013
Gujarat government may move High Court to get gas supplied by Gas Authority of India Limited(GAIL) at Dahej.
Union Petroleum ministry had promised the Gujarat High Court to supply cheaper gas to Gujarat by 30th November.
Accordingly, GAIL took a decision to supply gas to Gujarat State Petronet Limited(GSPL) at low pressure Suvali pipeline near Hazira in south Gujarat.
GSPL however wants GAIL to supply gas at high pressure pipeline at Dahej. GSPL has well established existing network of gas pipeline at Dahej LNG terminal. Contrary to this, at Suvali, there’s no network of gas distribution company.
There are some technical problems in sourcing of gas at Suvali. Contrary to this if GAIL is ready to supply gas at Dahej terminal, GSPL is ready to start gas distribution in few hours.
Gujarat based gas companies are at this point not ready to source gas from Hazira, and they have refused to sign the agreement. Gujarat has written a letter in this regard to centre, but there’s no reply. The issue may be raised in court during next hearing which is to take place on Wednesday.
