Spin masters ki “Jai Ho”

Rupang Bhatt, Ahmedabad, 24 January 2014

It was a photo-opportunity protest organized by Congress party’s student wing National Students Union of India(NSUI) today morning. Some journos were informed and invited for coverage of this protest event in advance.

The protest was against Bollywood star Salman Khan and his film Jai Ho which was released today.

The place was wall city Ahmedabad’s Rupam theater which is located in Muslim majority area.

But protest for what?

Well that’s because Salman spoke his mind on what he believed about Narendra Modi, riots and politics. He expressed his opinion when he was asked for that by media persons.

OK, but then why protest?

Well, because what Salman said was not favoring the interests of Congress party.

So, a group of few youths belonging to NSUI gathered outside Rupam cinema, damaged the posters of Salman starer film Jai Ho and shouted slogans when cameras were on.

Cameras of! Protest over!

While one local TV channel honestly described this protest as NSUI protest, the other local channel gave spin and described it as “protest by citizens”(as if not NSUI but common citizens were against Salman Khan and his film)!

One more local channel described it as “protest by minority community”!

If at all it was the protest by citizens, “Jai Ho” couldn’t be released at all in any theater!

And if it was a protest by minority community, then there are many theaters in minority dominated areas too! But they are all showing “Jai Ho” without any protest. Even Rupam theater – where NSUI protested – is located in minority dominated area of wall city Ahmedabad, but the film shows are on, and everything is normal.

NSUI is political outfit, and it may protest, and journalists may cover it. But why to call it a people’s protest programme or minority community’s protest, and not NSUI protest?
