Surat diamond merchants seeks 2 lakh sq.m land to build bourse

New Delhi, 6 July, 2014

Diamond barons of Surat wants state government to give them land as big as 2 lakh square meter for ambitious Surat Diamond Bourse project. On one hand there’s shortage of land, and land prices are very high in and around Surat, on the other hand the size of land diamond barons have demanded to construct bourse is too big. The government has not given clear assurance on land allocation therefore at this stage to diamond barons.

A working committee of Surat Diamond Bourse that includes Minister of state Nanubhai Vanani, Laljibhai Patel(Ugamedi), Mathurbhai Sawani(Padmashree), Vallabhbhai Lakhani, Dharambhai and two diamond merchants from Mumbai met Finance and Industry minister Saurabh Patel in Gandhinagar to make representation on land issue.

The working committee informed minister that they explored Sarsana, Khajod, Dumas, Abhva and Krushi farm Citylight in search of land. A piece of land two lakh square meter in size was available only a Navsari Krushi University and Citylight road Krushi Farm.

Diamond merchants have demanded so big land in size that the state government is not in position to take quick decision in this regard. Minister Saurabh Patel in his reply to delegation said he will have to check how much land is there in Krushi farm, how much will go in town planning, whether the land can be given as per the existing policy of state government etc.

It should be mentioned that diamond barons want to build a diamond bourse in Surat itself. Present the nearest bourse is situated in Mumbai.

Proposed bourse at Surat will have 15,000 trading offices, auction house, custom house, strong rooms, hotel, bank, trading room etc facilities.

The committee behind the idea of bourse is in contact with country’s top project consultants for design of the project. One such meeting had been held recently with CMT company in Mumbai.
