Gujarat shortlists Vadodara,Rajkot for proposed AIIMS

Ahmedabad, 19 July 2014

DeshGujarat had earlier reported about centre’s letter to Gujarat government regarding a location to set up All India Institute of Medical Science(AIIMS).

On Saturday, state Health Minister Nitin Patel during his speech at Rajkot said that proposed AIIMS will be set up either in Rajkot or in Vadodara. Patel was speaking at a function marking inauguration of a new medical hostel.

Patel said the state government’s role is limited to allotment of 200 acre land in this regard. Entire construction, operation and administration of proposed AIIMS will be handled by the centre, he added.

It should be noted that AIIMS will bring at least 1000-bed state-of-the-art medical facility and research center in Gujarat.

The city of Ahmedabad has already a state level Civil hospital which is being reconstructed and updated by the state government. Similarly the city has also the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation(AMC) run VS hospital which is being reconstructed and upgraded at present with massive push of fund.

The state government it seems has therefore rightly decided to set up AIIMS at either Rajkot or Vadodara. If it comes up at Rajkot, it will help to cut down inflow of patiens from Saurashtra and Kutch to Ahmedabad based Civil hospital. If it comes up at Vadodara, it will help patients from tribal dominated areas of east and central Gujarat.
