As per the details shared by the Minister of State (Independent Charge) in the Ministry of Commerce & Industry Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman in a written reply in Lok Sabha today, Gujarat has 18 functional and 24 nonfunctional SEZs.Contribution of exports from SEZ in Gujarat was Rs. 1,82,414.33 cror in year 2011-12, Rs. 2,26,937.74 crore in 2012-13 and Rs. 2,25,042 crore in 2012-13. In 2014-15 as on 30-9-2014 it is Rs. 1,07,602.42 crore. As on 30-9-2014, 64,356 people are employed in SEZs in Gujarat.

Recently Board of Approval on Special Economic Zones (SEZs) approved for de-notification/cancellation of 35 notified/formally approved SEZs across India as the progress made by the Developers of these SEZs is not satisfactory. These de-notification/cancellation are subject to payment of all applicable duties and tax benefits availed by the Developer and receipt of No-objection Certificate (NOC) from the concerned State Government.

Among a list of SEZs de-notified/cancelled by BoA, there are some SEZs of Gujarat. Essar Jamnagar SEZ Ltd, Asia Pacific Corporation Ltd(Kutch), Adani Township & Real Estate Company Pvt. Ltd(Ahmedabad), Gurinandan Property Holders Pvt. Ltd(Ahmedabad), Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation(Jhagadia).

Further, 18 in-principle approved SEZs have been cancelled by the Department owing to no further action has been taken by the Developers. A list of in-principle approved SEZs cancelled, mentions Indian Steel Corporation Ltd(Bhuj), Plastene Infrastructure Limited(Kutch) and LMJ Warehousing Private Limited(Kandla).
