Anil Kumar Sinha is new CBI Director

Shri Anil Kumar Sinha, an IPS Officer of 1979 Batch (Bihar Cadre) took over as Special Director in the Central Bureau of Investigation, New Delhi in May 2013. He was handling Special Crime Zone, Mumbai Zone, Lucknow Zone, STF Zone, MDMA Zone, Kolkata Zone, North East Zone, Economic Offences Zone – II, Chandigarh Zone and Bhopal Zone as Special Director.

Before joining CBI, he served as Additional Secretary, Central Vigilance Commission, New Delhi.

Shri Sinha has earlier held several important positions in his State cadre in Vigilance & Anti Corruption, Administration, Special Branch & other Divisions as SP, DIG, IG & ADG. He has served as Additional Director General of Police(Law & Order) and thereafter as Additional DG, he headed the Vigilance Investigation Bureau. He has been associated with the investigations of a number of sensitive cases, including a large number of trap cases and Disproportionate Assets Cases against corrupt public servants that ended in convictions of the accused persons and also in confiscation of their ill gotten property.

He has also served as DIG & IG in Special Protection Group, New Delhi and Additional Secretary in Central Vigilance Commission, New Delhi.

Shri Anil Kumar Sinha is a Post Graduate in Psychology and M.Phil in Strategic Studies. He has received training in Leading Economic Growth from Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. He has been decorated with the Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 2000 and the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2006.


On his appointment as CBI Director:

A three-member committee comprising Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Justice of India HL dattu and leader of the main Opposition party Congress in Lok Sabha met on selecting the new CBI chief.

The panel discussed the names of about 40 officers shortlisted by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT).
