India’s first ‘Bakri Shala’ to come up in Gujarat

When it comes to animal welfare, people of Gujarat have been on forefront to offer their services. There are dedicated panjrapols for cows, donkeys, peacocks, birds and even black bucks. There are scores of people who offer flour to ants. In many communities including Rabaris, snakes are worshiped. There are dozens of examples of people giving life to rescue animals on their way to slaughter.

North Gujarat town Harij will get India’s first Bakri shala(a shelter home for goats).

Bhoomi pujan ceremony for proposed Bakri shala was held on Wednesday by Mumbai based Gunvantray Dipchandbhai Shah in presence of Harij Panjrapol’s Pankajbhai Shah, Pravinbhai Thakkar, Gunvantbhai Thakkar, Market Yard Chairman Visabhai Chaudhary, Kanjibhai Desai, Narsinhbhai Chaudhary, Vasibhai Ahir among others.

Bakrishala will do conservation activity for goats. It will take care of goats rescued from slaughter by police and animal welfare organizations.

On this occasion. Dr. Apurva Shah spoke about importance of goats. He said average life of a goat is in range of 12-14 years, but due to poor care, they are sent to slaughter within two-three years of age.

He said in his childhood he was treated permanently by goat milk. This incident sow seeds in his mind to start Prabha Bakri Shala farm.

Prabha Bakri Shala will also have Intensive Care Unit(ICU) for sick goats.

Donors will spend Rs. 1 crore on this welfare project.
