New high power oversight committee formed to monitor industrial pollution in Gujarat

To monitor and control the activity of Common Effluent Treatment Plant(CETP)s which treat polluted water and other chemical hazardous products the state government has formed a high level oversight committee under the Additional Chief Secretary(ACS), Forest & Environment and ACS, Industries & Mines department. Industries commissioner, Managing Director, Gujarat Industrial Development corporation(GIDC), Member Secretary, Gujarat Pollution Control Board(GPCB), technical experts and the representatives of the Government of India(GOI) and representatives of the concern industries will be members of the oversight committee.

The broad scope of work of the committee will be to monitor and review the environment projects of the project proponents, assess the future environment need of the industries and remedial action and to make suggestion to improve the environment. The oversight committee has been empowered by the state government to direct the project proponent for better management of the environment issues. The committee will also recommend for newer technology to control pollution and if require it will also recommend the state government to increase financial assistance for improving existing projects or new projects.
