On one day there are three announcements on Indian giants collaborating/contributing major operations abroad.

BHEL enters Turkey with euro 16.96 mn contract

State-run power equipment maker Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) Monday said it had bagged a contract for a thermal power project worth euro 16.96 in its maiden entry to Turkey.

Winning the contract through global competitive bidding, the company will rehabilitate three units of Electrostatic Precipitator (ESP) for the 430 MW Tuncbilek Thermal Power Project in Turkey on EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) basis.

The ESP is a device which removes suspended dust particles from gas or exhaust by applying a high-voltage electrostatic charge and collecting the particles on charged plates.

The order for EPC has been placed by Turkey’s state-run largest electric power company, Electricity Generation Co (EGC).

According to BHEL, Turkey has embarked on a renovation and modernization programme of its old thermal power projects. The present contract is aimed at reducing the emission level drastically.

It said the ESPs will be manufactured and supplied by BHEL’s Ranipet unit, and motors and other auxiliaries by its Bhopal facility.

“BHEL’s globalisation strategies are yielding rich dividends and BHEL today has references in over 76 countries in six continents,” the company said in a statement.

GMR’s Philippines JV raises USD 750 million for Cebu airport

India-based GMR Infrastructure’s joint venture GMR Megawide Cebu Airport Corporation (GMCAC) Monday said it has signed agreements for financing 70 percent of the Mactan Cebu International Airport project in Cebu in the Philippines worth nearly USD 750 million.

GMCAC is a joint venture of GMR Infrastructure with 40 percent share holding and the Philippines-based Megawide Construction Corporation with a 60 percent stake.

The loan for the project is being financed by six Philippines-based banks – BDO Unibank Inc, Bank of the Philippine Islands, Development Bank of the Philippines, Land Bank of the Philippines and Metrobank and Philippine National Bank.

The total equity contribution of GMR to GMCAC will be nearly USD 90 million, of which the Indian construction company has already invested USD 48 million.

GMCAC will be responsible for construction, development, renovation, expansion and operation of the Mactan Cebu International Airport for a period of 25 years as laid down in the Concession Agreement signed earlier.

“This marks a key milestone for GMCAC in its journey to transform MCIA into a world class airport. MCIA is the first airport in Philippines to be privatized under the administration’s ambitious PPP programme aimed at modernizing key infrastructure assets”, the company said in a statement.

In the international competitive bidding process GMR-Megawide Consortium had emerged as the highest bidder after offering a bid premium of approximately $305 million.

Suzlon’s subsidiary inks contracts with four UK firms

India-based Suzlon Energy Ltd’s UK subsidiary Senvion Monday said it has signed contracts with four UK firms for supplying turbines for production of 63.5 MW of electricity which will power 38,000 homes in Britain.

Senvion has also signed service and maintenance contracts with three of the companies engaged in generation of wind electricity.

“We are delighted to be signing a further four turbine contracts in the UK including our first with RES,” company CEO Andreas Nauen said.

Wind turbine maker Senvion will be supplying the equipment to the four UK-based wind firms – Penmanshiel developed by RES, Reaps Moss, New Albion and Watford Lodge.

According to the company, pre-construction has already started in Penmanshiel and New Albion while the process is due to start in summer next year for Reaps Moss and Watford Lodge.

Senvion introduced its multi-megawatt offshore turbines 10 years ago and has installed more than 130 such turbines offshore.

Early December, the company said it was conducting a techno-commercial feasibility study for an offshore wind power project in Gujarat which, if successful, will be the country’s first such project.
