Power-surplus after PM visit, Tripura supplies electricity to other states

In a reciprocal gesture, power-surplus Tripura has started supplying electricity to neighbouring states Mizoram and Meghalaya for smooth celebration of Christmas, a minister said today.

“We have already started giving them power from last Saturday and would continue till January 2. They also gave us power during the celebration of Durga puja in the state. So, the gesture is based on reciprocity,” Tripura Power Minister, Manik De said.

Tripura is supplying 15 MW power to Mizoram and 20 MW to Meghalaya, the minister told reporters.

After the inauguration of the 726-MW gas-based thermal power project at Palatana in Gomati district by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 1, Tripura became a power-surplus state and requested the Cente to sell 100 MW power to Bangladesh from its quota as the later allowed its water and road ways for carrying the over dimensional machines of the power project.

Dey said, another gas-based thermal power project of 102 MW would be made operational by North East Power Corporation (NEEPCO) at Monarchak in Sipahijala district next month.
