Insult of Hindu Gods and Goddesses by Teesta: Hearing scheduled in June

Ahmedabad

Hearing in a case related to posting of objectionable pictures of Hindu gods and goddesses on Twitter in which controversial NGO operator Teesta Setalvad is accused will take place on 15 June.

The Gujarat High Court had last year granted a stay on any legal action against Teesta in this case in which FIRs were filed at multiple places including Ahmedabad and Bhavnagar.

In Bhavnagar, an FIR was lodged against Setalwad by a social worker Kirit Mistry in ‘C’ division police station on August 23 accusing her of displaying objectionable pictures of Hindu gods and goddesses. Setalwad was charged with promoting enmity between two religious groups and committing deliberate malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings or any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs under Sections 153(A) and 205(A) of the IPC. The FIR also demanded action against Setalwad for projecting Hindu gods and goddesses in bad light and hurting religious sentiments.

The case is about Teesta’s posting on twitter on 23 August describing Hindu Gods as ISIS terrorists. Following outrage, Teesta had deleted the tweet and tendered apology in succeeding tweets.
