Amreli
A progressive farmer from Paniya village of Amreli district in Gujarat has developed a new variety of wheat which gives double production compared to existing popular Lok Van variety. According to farmer Jayantibhai Desai, three years ago he observed in his farm that certain plants were having greater development in terms of size and produce. He separated those plants from others and sow 2.5 kg seeds from which he could obtain 9600 kg wheat. According to Desai, one wheat after plantation offered 2,000 number of wheat. Jayantibhai sent this seed to Junagadh based Agriculture University and got his seed recognized. Jayantibhai Patel has named this variety of seed as JP 101.
Jayantibhai said that while commonly the size of ‘dundi’ of wheat plant is 4.5 inch long containing 40-45 wheat, the new variety has the size of 8-9 inch containing 80-120 wheat. Each plant has such 21 ‘dundi’. Compared to Bansi or Lok Van, the new variety needs half the number of seeds while production is doubled.
