Over 100 from Surat to attend Surat Thani’s 100th anniversary in Thailand

Surat

There’s a Surat city in Thailand too. And that Surat city is also situated on the bank of river Tapi. Is this coincidence? No, it’s not.

King Vajiravudh (Rama VI), the ruler of Thailand(photo attached) had traveled to Surat in south Gujarat in initial years of 19th century. He was so impressed by Surat city and its port that he changed the name of his country’s Fund Dong river to Tapi and also changed the name of Chaiya province to Surat Thani on July 29th, 1995.

The government of Thailand is now going to hold a grand celebration to mark 100th year of renaming of river and province.

Thailand government has invited Surat Municipal Corporation(SMC) to take part in this celebration. In response to it, Surat Mayor Niranjan Zanzmera and Deputy Municipal Commissioner CY Bhatt are going to attend the function. About 100 leading persons from Surat city in Gujarat including the representatives of Chamber of Commerce, Tourism Corporation of Gujarat and city BJP are going to attend the celebration as well.

Surat delegation will hold meeting with Governor of Surat Thani on July 22nd, and visit local administration office.

There’s even a trade expo happening on this occasion at Surat Thani in which 23 stalls are allocated to Surat and Gujarat.

On July 23, river Tapi in Surat Thani province will be worshiped. It will be followed by cultural events.

The visiting delegation from Surat, Gujarat will extend invitation to Surat Thani city office bearers to visit Surat in Gujarat.

Thailand based Indian consulate is also going to take part in this celebration.
