The Gujarat government today alleged that the main opposition party Congress was behind the spate of pro reservation rallies of politically strong Patel or Patidar community in the state with an intention to create divide in the society for immoral political benefits.

Government spokesperson, health minister and senior leader of the ruling BJP, Mr. Nitinbhai Patel categorically said that congress was giving air to the pro-reservation rallies and demonstrations.

‘We have information that many of the party members and MLAs were involved in all this. They have done so in the past and even now with such tactics they are trying to divide the society on the line of caste,’ Mr. Patel, who himself comes from the patidar community to which chief minister Mrs. Anandiben Patel, Finance Minister Saurabh Patel and other political big-wigs belong to, said.

He said, “Congress is provoking people to disturb peace and spark off clashes between communities. Congress wishes to spark off riots. Congress party is into double game. On one hand its party persons and MLAs provoke Patidar community people to seek reservation and on the other hand it provokes existing beneficiaries of reservation system and convey them that if Patidars get benefits of reservation, the existing beneficiaries will have to suffer.”

To a query regarding any possibility of dialogues with the pro-reservation community leaders, he said that the government was ready to talk to any one. on the other hand the Congress refuted the charges and said that the BJP was using use and throw policy with the patels with whose help it got the power in the state. Party spokesperson Manish Doshi said that BJP’s allegations were baseless.

Recently union minister Mohanbhai Kundaria and Gujarat BJP general secretary Mansukhbhai Mandavia had also alleged Congress’s role in this agitation.

Other BJP leaders have expressed their opinion that as per the Supreme Court orders it is not possible to give reservation.
