Khadi Utsav 2015 kicks off in Ahmedabad

‘Narendra Modi kurtas and jackets’ will dominate Gujarat Government’s khadi marketing drive launched from today to coincide with 146th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

The kurtas and jackets worn by Prime Minister Narendra Modi have been a much discussed subject for sometime now, especially in Gujarat, where they have become a rage among the youngsters who are opting to wear them during grand occasions.

“In a bid to promote khadi and celebrate Gandhiji’s 146th birth anniversary, Gujarat Government has launched an aggressive marketing drive which will see ‘Narendra Modi kurtas and jackets’ as among the main attractions in the ensemble along with garments like khadi denim to attract the youth,” Finance Minister Saurabh Patel told PTI today.

“This year, the main attraction is the introduction of a wide range of khadi apparels, both for men and women, in new styles that include Modi kurtas and jackets,” said Patel, who is also the Minister for khadi, cottage industries and energy.

A special discount of 25 per cent would be given on khadi products manufactured in Gujarat, while those from other states will have a 15 per cent rebate, he said.

“A special discount sale of khadi products has started at Khadi Gramodyog Sahkarisangh Ltd’s stores in Vadodara, Surat, Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Jamnagar, Porbandar and other parts of the State,” he said.

Jashvant Dalvadi, Sales Manager at a Khadi Gramodyog store in Vadodara, said “Right from the time Modi became Prime Minister, orders for Modi jackets and kurtas have grown manifold. A large numbers of NRIs settled in US, Canada, UK on a visit to city buy them.”

Upendra Vaidya, a 76-year-old consulting physician, said, “Modi has managed to set a fashion trend. I have bought one red koti (jacket) for my son Kashyap who is settled in Canada.

He will wear it over kurta and churidar pyjama.”

Thakorbhai Patel, Secretary, Baroda District Khadi Gramodyog Sahkari Sangh, said “sales of the jackets have surged after Modi became Prime Minister.
