BJP gets majority in GMC as Pravin Patel ‘Quality’ rejoins the party as Mayoral candidate

Gandhinagar
Congress Councillor Pravin Patel who is locally known as ‘Quality’ rejoined today original political party BJP as party’s Mayoral candidate. Pravin Patel has been elected as new Mayor of Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation(GMC) where both BJP and Congress had won 16 seats each after recently concluded general elections for civic body.
As both parties had won same number of seats, there was a situation of tie in Gandhinagar. The board meeting was called today for election of Mayor and Deputy Mayor. Pravin Patel, a popular local Councillor who was originally in BJP but had left the party and joined Congress due to denial of ticket for candidature in year 2011 GMC polls rejoined the BJP during the board meeting and was elected as Mayor while Devendrasinh Chavda was elected as Deputy Mayor. Manubhai Patel was made Standing Committee Chairman.
There was some obvious disturbance in board meeting from Congress side as it was a sudden shock for Congress Councillors to learn that one of their Councillors announced support to BJP. Some Congress Councillors tried to push Pravin Patel. Extra police force was deployed by District Superintendent of Police who also was present here.
Possibility of more Congress Councillors joining BJP in future can’t be denied. Congress has announced that it would go to court against Pravin Patel’s decision to change party.
Congress party had organized Rajasthan tour to prevent its Councillors from any communication from BJP side.
With this, all 8 municipal corporations( Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat, Rajkot, Jamnagar, Bhavnagar, Junagadh, Gandhinagar) across Gujarat are ruled by BJP with clear majority.
