July 09, 2016
Surat: BJP MP Prabhu Vasava and Minister of State for Tribal Development, Government of Gujarat Kantibhai Gamit today led an agitation against “too high” toll tax levied at Songadh toll tax booth on highway connecting Hazira to Nagpur, popularly known as Dhuliya interstate highway.
Vasava said the agitation is not against his party’s government in state of centre. He said during the period when local Congress leader Tushar Chaudhary was minister of state in Congress-led UPA government in centre, the agreements for this toll road were signed in a way that it caused great trouble for local people.
He said this area is mainly populated by tribal people. “When our people go to jobs, when students travel for education purpose they need to bear the burden of toll which is too high for them”, he added.
Vasava said a truck gets Rs 900 for a trip but Rs 700 is spent on toll payment. The rates of toll are not viable for those in business.
Update:
The agitation has achieved success. Locals are barred from paying toll tax while for commercial vehicles, only one side toll tax will be levied in 24 hours for one trip.
