IIT Gandhinagar trains youths from neighboring villages for skills

Palaj, Gandhinagar: To mark the celebration of ‘World Youth Skills Day’, on Friday (July 15, 2016), Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN) will host an exhibition of products such as wooden stools, benches, 3-tier metal stands, metal folding cots, grill sections, extension boards, photo frames, laptop tables, grain storage tins, industrial trays, machine tools, gears and parts, and so on. These products are made by the trainees of an ongoing Vocational Skills Training Program (VSTP).

The event will be attended by Managing Director of GIDC, Smt D Thara, IAS.The VSTP is a two-month long vocational skills training course at IITGN from May 23, 2016. The course is participated by 25 young men in the age-group of 18 to 28 years. Most of the participants are from Palaj and Basan, the villages neighbouring IITGN.

 

The participants are taught trades such as carpentry, fitting, wiring, plumbing, tin-smithy, machining and welding. In addition to vocational skills, the program also includes modules on business skills, soft skills as well as field visit to local industries. The initiative which is offered entirely free of cost, aims to make employment or entrepreneurial opportunities more readily accessible to the participants, and also encourage them to undertake further advanced training in the trades of their choice.

 

The program is organised by ‘Neev’, one of the community outreach programs at IITGN, in collaboration with the mechanical engineering lab staff and electrical engineering lab staff of IITGN. The program is supported by the Desai Foundation, USA.
