Background: An under-trial accused of murder Pravin(25) was brought to Sabarmati jail about three months back. He escaped from high security Sabarmati Central jail on July 24. This was the first instance of this kind in which accused successfully escaped from central jail in Gujarat. Police officials were surprised by this escape as they were believing it was impossible for any prisoner to escape this high-security jail. Pravin had jumped two walls in order to escape the prison. The outer wall was 20 ft high high and it had electric shock passing through the installations atop it. There was a watch tower guarded by a cop nearby. The guard however was sleeping when Pravin jumped off the wall in daylight at around 12.30 pm. Jail authority came to know about Pravin’s escape only after it counted prisoners at 6.00 pm. CCTV footage showed that Pravin climbed 15 ft wall first and then with the help of iron angle he climbed 20 ft outer wall. According to police, there was not enough current passing through the installation over wall and therefore Pravin could escape electric shock. An FIR regarding his escape was lodged in the Ranip police station in Ahmedabad but the investigation was handed over to the crime branch. Victim family, member of which Pravin had murdered was given police protection. Police had got some leads through visitor diary of jail and through mobile phone location of Pravin’s relative and friend in jail area.
