Gujarat govt quashes notifications, circulars, orders on 10% EBC quota
September 23, 2016
Gandhinagar: Provision of 10% reserved seat quota for Economically Backward Class(EBC) was made by Gujarat government through 1st May 2016 notification, against which four petitions were filed in Gujarat High Court.
The provision of 10% EBC quota was canceled by Gujarat High Court in its 4 August order.
The state government had challenged this verdict in the Supreme Court through SLP 23544-23547/2016, following which on 9-9-2016 the Supreme Court gave verdict in which it said: Pending further orders, we direct that the admissions made to any educational institution prior to the pronouncement of the impugned order shall not be disturbed. We make it clear that since the impugned Ordinance has been struck down by the High Court, no further action towards implementation of the reservation made under the said ordinance can be taken qua education and service matters.
In view of this verdict by Supreme Court, the Gujarat government has taken a decision to quash all notification/circular regarding 10% EBC quota. The decision will be formally conveyed to public via newspapers.
