Ahmedabad:Twelve persons were injured when an amusement park ride malfunctioned at a resort at Ubhrat in Navsari district this afternoon.
The accident took place at Modi Resort in Ubhrat village of Jalalpore tehsil which attracts a large number of tourists during Diwali vacation, police said.
Inspector D K Patel said all the 12 occupants of a vertical ride, popularly known as ‘parachute jump’, fell from the height of 10 feet due to cable slip.
“In this ride occupants are pulled up and down using cables. One of the cables slipped when occupants were 10 feet above the ground. All 12 occupants fell and received back injuries,” said Patel, who rushed to the spot after getting receiving the news about the accident.
As per a certificate issued by state Road and Building Department which had conducted an inspection the ride was safe, said the police officer.
The injured were being teated at nearby hospitals.
Victims and bystanders claimed that the cable actually snapped.
“The cable snapped, not slipped, when occupants were in mid-air. We even saw rust on the cable,” said Vipinbhai, a witness, alleging lack of maintenance.
However, the resort authorities denied this. “The cable only slipped from the main pulley. It was not broken. No occupant has sustained major injury,” said an official of the resort.
