Gujarat govt amends prohibition act in order to make punishments more stringent

Gandhinagar: Gujarat Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Vijay Rupani today gave its nod the amendments in Prohibition Law in order to make punishments for liquor production, sell and consumption more stringent. Following are the details shared by Minister of State, Home department, Government of Gujarat Shri Pradipsinh Jadeja:

– Upto 3-year jail and fine as per existing law for purchase, sell and transport of liquor. The government makes amendment for upto 10-year jail and upto Rs 5 lakh fine.

– Those who are found operating liquor dens or extending help to liquor dens will face upto 10-year jail and upto Rs 1 lakh fine following amendment in section 68 by the government in its latest decision.

– Those making nuisance after consuming liquor, speak offending words, involve into fight will face minimum 1 and maximum 3 years imprisonment and fine as per the latest decision taken by the government. Existing law is able to give only 1-3 month jail and Rs 200-500 fine.

– Officers and others who extend help to escape the accused will get upto 7-year imprisonment and upto Rs 1 lakh fine. Those who obstruct officials performing their duty or attack the officials will get upto 5-year jail and minimum Rs 5 lakh fine.

– Vehicles caught transporting liquor will be permanently seized as government property.
