Gujarat Governor gives consent to prohibition ordinance

Gandhinagar: Governor O P Kohli has given his consent to the ordinance of the state government regarding modification in the earlier prohibition law in the state with more stringent punishment provisions for illegal production sale and consumption of liquor.
Minister of state for home Pradipsinh Jadeja today informed that with the formal consent of the governor the ordinance has come in to force. The state monitoring cell would now keep a close watch on those involved in illicit liquor business. Toll free numbers and social media links can be used for awareness about the law and information about those breaking it.
The state cabinet had given its nod to the ordinance on December 15.
The ordinance provides for 10 years of jail term and Rs 5 lakh fine for the sale of liquor instead of earlier 3 years. According to the ordinance those found operating liquor shops or extending help to liquor dens will face upto 10-year jail and upto Rs 1 lakh fine.Those consuming liquor will now be liable to a punishment of up to 3 years instead of earlier up to 3 months.Officials and others who help in escapade of the accused under the act will get up to 7-years of imprisonment and upto Rs 1 lakh fine. Those who obstruct officials performing their duty or attack the officials will get upto 5-year jail and minimum Rs 5 lakh fine. Vehicles caught transporting liquor will be permanently seized as government property.
