Rahul Gandhi visits Umiya Mandir in Unjha before addressing Mahesana rally in North Gujarat

Unjha: After Aam Admi Party(AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal, today another Delhi based politician was on visit to Umiya Mata temple in North Gujarat. Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi visited Umiya Mandir and offered prayer conducted by mandir priest in presence of Congress leaders Bharatsinh Solanki, Shankersinh Vaghela and Siddharth Patel. Goddess Umiya or Uma is Kuldevi of Kadva Patidar community. As general elections of Gujarat assembly are less than a year away, this mandir visit in Unjha is largely viewed under political shadow. It is no secret that Congress party in Gujarat is trying to woo Patidar community votes. Patidars are conventionally BJP supporters but quota agitation led by Kadva Patidar youth Hardik Patel has caused partial damage to this support. Leader of NCP Praful Patel and leader of AAP Arvind Kejriwal have visited Gujarat recently expecting to get benefit of situation and gain Patidar votes. Now Rahul Gandhi is also here for same reason. In January, Janata Dal(U) leader Nitish Kumar is also coming to address a rally in same backdrop. Rahul is going to address a public meeting in Mahesana which has elected Congress candidate to Lok Sabha in 2009. Thanks to Patidar agitation which was on its height last year, Mahesana town has elected Congress to local body. However infighting is very intense in this Congress-led body, plus impact of Patidar agitation has been largely over, if not completely for now. In the past, Sonia Gandhi had also addressed public meeting in Mahesana and attracted huge crowd. However Congress failed to convert it into political victory. Today huge crowd has been gathered in Mahesana which is around one-lakh strong.
