Junagadh Sakkarbaug Zoo puts red necked wallabies, African caracals in public display

Junagadh: One of the leading zoos of South Asia, Junagadh based Sakkarbaug Zoo in Gujarat has now put five red necked wallabies( they look like kangaroo) and three African caracals in public display.They were brought to Ahmedabad from Prague in Europe by air last month and further transported to Sakkarbaug zoo.

Chief Forest Conservator A.P. Singh and Zoo director S.J.Pandit making this announcement said that the new animals are received from Prague zoo in Europe in exchange of the Asiatic lion Jamva, and two lionesses Ginni and Suchi.

In December 2014, the Czech government had requested for some lions from the central government for Prague zoo. As per the Wildlife Protection Act, the CZAI sent the file to Gujarat for chief wildlife warden’s permission.

According to Singh the caracal was needed for research in Gujarat as the state has less than six pairs of caracal left in Kutch.

Singh and Pandit said Sakkarbaug zoo has receiveed more than 282 animals/birds from 17 species in last two years while 24 asiatic lions are sent to 13 different zoos across India and zoos in London and Prague from here.

They said Sakkarbaug zoo will soon get giraffe from Kolkata, Rhinoceros from Kanpur, Cheetah and Zebra from London and Lemut and green peacock from Prague zoo.

They also shared details regarding breeding programme at Sakkarbaug zoo under which breeding of lion, wild ass, chaushinga, chinkara, vulture and wolf is being attempted.
