General Motors Halol unit shuts down, 80 cars manufactured on the last day

Vadodara: More than 1600 employees of General Motors India car manufacturing plant at Halol in Central Gujarat are now unemployed due to closure of car plant on permanent basis. The car plant which was operating at Halol since 1999 shut down due to shrinking market share and labour problems. There are more than two dozen ancillary units that employ around 5,500 labourers. There’s all possibility that these labourers will also lose jobs. Some of these units are planning to shift to Sanand, while few others who supply parts to multiple manufacturing units will continue to function at Halol as they are not solely dependent on General Motors facility in Halol. Typically one car needs 25,000 different types of parts. For General Motors employees, the company has given two options. One is separation payment and the other is transfer to company’s Maharshtra based plant. General Motors had announced closure of its Halol unit as early as in 2015 so that employees can plan their future accordingly. On the last day which was yesterday 80 cars were manufactured at Halol plant.
