Surat to start door to door segregated waste collection from June 5

Surat: Surat Municipal Corporation(SMC) will start segregated waste collection from June 5, World Environment Day.
According to city municipal commissioner door to door segregated waste collection will collect dry and wet waste separately. Tender process is on for waste to energy generation in size of 1200 mt waste. To make the city container free all routes will be covered under door to door collection with recruitment of additional 700 cleanliness workers. New routes will be added to existing 220 routes covered under night cleaning process. Over 2 lakh trees will be planted in order to provide further green cover to city.
Commissioner Thennarsan said, in recent cleanliness survey carried out by the central government, Surat has stood first among cities with population above 50 lakh. He said Surat has stood second in citizens feedback category. He said Surat missed first rank due to several shortcomings such as lack of documents to submit for waste to fertilizer process, lack of facilities in toilets for divyangs and children etc.
