July 03, 2017
Diu: Congress has retained its hold over the municipality of Diu by winning 10 out of total 13 wards.
The election for the local body in this union territory adjoining Gujarat was held on Saturday.
The counting of the election took place today in which BJP could win only 3 wards, which was an improvement from last time’s 2.
However, in an embarrassment to BJP, its Daman and Diu unit’s vice president Kiritbahi Vaja, who had contested the election from ward number 6, has lost though with a thin margin.
In the last election in 2012 also Congress, which is continuously ruling the local body for the past 10 years, had won in 10 wards while BJP in 2 and one was won by independent candidate.
72.70 % voting had taken place in the July 1 polls.
Buoyed by the win months before the assembly election in Gujarat, party president Bharat Solanki tweeted, “Diu has rejected BJP as Cong wins 10 out of 13 seats in N’palika. This is only the beginning, same will be repeated in Guj!”
