ST bus services on several routes across North Gujarat suspended

Gandhinagar:

The operation of ST buses on several routes across North Gujarat has been suspended today owing to targeting of at least 4 such buses yesterday and ongoing on road protests by anti Padmawat protesters.

An official of the Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation said that the decision to suspend bus operation on various routes in Mahesana, Gandhinagar, Patan, Sabarkantha, Aravllali and Banaskantha districts has been taken as a precautionary measure.

‘A decision to resume the services on the routes would be taken after reviewing the situation. It was the best way to prevent damage to our buses even though it causes difficulty to common commuters. People should understand the value of our services. ST buses were like lifeline of public transport system in the state and targeting them every now and then was a very bad thing,’ he said.

Meanwhile, police has been instructed to take all possible measures for resumption of bus services at the earliest on some of the routes.

A police official in Himmatnagar said that patrol and other arrangements were being made but clearance for plying of buses would be given only after getting fully assured about the safety.

‘ST buses were easy targets and many anti social elements in the garb of protesters would also try to damage them and create panic among people,’ he said.

The protesters however have continued protests today as well. Karni sena blocked Amabji-Palanpur highway in Deesa this morning while Mahakal sena blocked a road near Unawa in Mahesana. The members of Karni Sena alongwith VHP workers blocked Mumbai-Ahmedabad NH 8 in Navsari by burning tyres.
